about

18 years and 12 albums in, San Francisco’s The Well Wishers remain a mainstay for well-crafted, hook-laden power pop. Following the release of 2020’s Shelf Life LP, frontman Jeff Shelton took a brief two-year diversion to exorcise his shoegaze and dreampop demons with the side-project Deadlights – releasing two full length LPs. As 2022 rolled around however, he was anxious to return to his hard-driving power pop roots – with new creative vigor and lyrical inspiration…

“During the pandemic I lost 25 pounds, got into shape and even rode my bike down the California coast”, Shelton explains. “The focus, freedom and sheer thrill of the ride while absorbing the beauty of the natural environment really informed a lot of this record.” Soaring tracks like “Hours and Days”, “Blue Water” and title track “Blue Sky Sun” evoke such inspiration, while the melodic groove of “Who Lost That Feeling?” finds Shelton imploring “….all I want is a place to roam where the beauty gets under my skin.” Amidst this musical thank-you note to nature, Shelton finds space to throw in a little political and social snark with tracks like “Idiot Smile” and “Radicalized”, as well as a reverential cover of Guided By Voices fave “Game of Pricks”.

Guest guitar work from former bandmates Pete Bohan (Headslide) and Marty Schneider (Trip Wire) and driving piano from local pal Chris Brown add extra color to the hard-driving power pop affair.
